Dysgraphia

Dysgraphia is when handwriting is much harder than it should be. It is a neurological learning disability resulting in illegible handwriting and difficulty putting thoughts onto paper.

There is not enough research or advocacy for dysgraphia. Most educational professonals don’t know enough about dysgraphia to help the students they work with.

Dysgraphia in children is often overlooked as children who are lazy or not trying hard enough.

This is simply not true.

It is a disconnect between your brain and your hand. Imagine writing with your non-dominant hand, while wearing sunglasses in a low-lit room. This can be how handwriting feels for children with dysgraphia.

Some signs of dysgraphia include:

  • Writing very slowly
  • Writing that is very hard to read
  • Holding a pencil with an awkward grasp
  • Hand pain/fatigue when writing
  • Avoiding writing
  • Becoming very frustrated with handwriting
  • Struggling to get ideas from brain onto paper

The good news is with the right support, children with dysgraphia can improve their handwriting and grow their confidence!

At Happy Writers, we focus on building the foundational skills for handwriting using evidence-based strategies.
